King stresses need for
focus on peace process
Monarch receives Jordan’s UN envoy Prince Zeid
AMMAN (JT) — His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday received Jordan’s UN
Ambassador Prince Zeid Raad on the occasion his nomination for UN secretary
general.
Jordan sent a letter to the president of the UN Security Council formally
submitting the candidacy of Prince Zeid, a widely respected diplomat and former
UN peacekeeper who is a cousin of the King.
The nomination was announced on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, King Abdullah reiterated on yesterday that the Palestinian issue is
the core conflict in the Middle East and there is a need to find a permanent and
just solution.
The Monarch made his remarks during a meeting yesterday at the Royal Court with
a delegation from the Bangladesh Defence College.
The King also underlined the need to activate the peace process with
international, Arab and Islamic support to lead to the creation of an
independent Palestinian state that lives side by side with Israel.
King Abdullah also stressed the importance of supporting all efforts to restore
security and reconcile the factions in Iraq by involving the entire community in
the political process.
Responding to a question by the delegation, King Abdullah emphasised the
importance of continued cooperation between Islamic countries to display the
real image of Islam as a faith of tolerance and moderation.
He also highlighted the ties between Jordan and Bangladesh, and discussed
prospects of cooperation, especially in the economic field.
Also on Wednesday, King Abdullah participated in a presentation of flags
ceremony for Public Security Department (PSD) units.
In a speech at the ceremony, PSD Director Lieutenant General Mohammad Aitan
referred to the PSD’s plans to develop new correctional and rehabilitation
centres in line with international standards.
