Gov’t launches Trade and Investment Information System

AMMAN (JT) — The government launched a website yesterday which provides up-to-date information on trade and investment in the country.

The Trade and Investment Information System (TIIS) project consists of a website which automatically-compiles, standardises and publishes updated national statistics on trade and investment to international standards.

The online system, established at the Department of Statistics (DoS) in cooperation with the USAID-funded AMIR Programme, consists of two main information components; Trade Information, offering statistical data on merchandise trade and trade in services, and Investment Information, which consists of investment activities and general investment indicators.

At the launch ceremony, Planning and International Cooperation Minister Suhair Al-Ali said that the TIIS project corresponds with national efforts aimed at improving Jordan’s data systems on trade and investment, and addressing the pressing need for readily available, accurate, timely, and comparative statistics for effective policy-making.

She noted that Jordan is the 5th country in the world to provide such a database for trade and investment information.

Al-Ali said future upgrades to the system will be undertaken to include other key sectors, such as tourism and the labour market.

Also at the launch, Industry and Trade Minister Sharif Zu’bi said the system would provide comprehensive and accurate statistical data on investment and trade for decision makers, investors, researchers and analysts.

Statistics in the TIIS are provided and periodically updated by eight participating government entities that generate primary data on trade and/or investment, including the Controller Department, Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Central Bank of Jordan, Jordan Industrial Estates Corporation, Amman Chamber of Industry and Jordan Investment Board, in addition to the mentioned government ministries.
