Amman Municipality to introduce transport facilities for the handicapped
AMMAN (Petra) Representatives of 12 nations, including Jordan, on Monday opened a three-day regional workshop on the rehabilitation of persons with special needs.
Organised by the Greater Amman Municipality in conjunction with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) office in Amman, the delegates will review ways to spread awareness among local communities concerning the treatment of persons with special needs and the legislation to facilitate special training and rehabilitation for them.
Prince Ra'd Ben Zeid, who opened the meeting, outlined steps taken by the state to help the handicapped in education and vocational training.
Calling on all sectors to provide whatever possible assistance to the handicapped, Prince Ra'd said the rehabilitation process is long and requires patience and cooperation among the authorities and the local communities.
Amman Mayor Nidal Hadid announced that the Amman Municipality plans to introduce special measures to secure transport facilities for the handicapped within the Amman area. He called on the media to urge local communities to provide assistance to the disabled. UNESCO Representative Martin Hadlow said the organisation is joining hands with the Amman Municipality to offer every possible assistance to the handicapped.
Countries represented at the meeting are: Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Libya and Iran in addition to Jordan.
