Premier urges allocating funds for scientific research
AMMAN (Petra) — Prime Minister Adnan Badran said on Wednesday that the Kingdom's universities should allocate funds for scientific research from their budgets to address the country's problems, especially in fields of water and energy.
The premier's statements were made during a
seminar on higher education, development and reform.
Badran stressed the government's support for universities and educational
institutions with regard to scientific research.
“It is the duty of all to participate in dialogue on developing higher
education,” Badran said.
Referring to the National Agenda, expected to be presented to His Majesty King
Abdullah before the end of this month, Badran said it sets the guideline for
succeeding governments on implementing development plans.
The premier also underlined the need to develop students' talents, particularly
in industrial fields.
Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research
Khalid Touqan and Minister of Culture Mahmoud Amin also attended the event.
Touqan, for his part, reviewed the situation at the public and private
universities with regard to the number of students and the financial status of
these institutions, describing the situation as “unpleasant.”
He also reviewed the ministry's future plans to develop higher education in line
with the National Agenda and gave a detailed presentation of the challenges and
obstacles hindering the development of higher education in the Kingdom.
