Iraqi vice president arrives
in Kingdom
AMMAN (Petra) — Iraqi Vice President Ghazi Yawer arrived in the Kingdom on
Tuesday for a two-day visit to bolster Jordanian-Iraqi relations.
Speaking at a meeting with Yawer at the Royal
Court, HRH Prince Ali, the Regent, said Jordan supports all efforts to create a
unified and strong Iraq and provide a decent life for its citizens.
During the meeting, Prince Ali and Yawer reviewed the latest developments in
Iraq and ongoing efforts to include all sectors of Iraqi society in the
political process.
Prime Minister Adnan Badran, who welcomed the vice president at the airport
ahead of talks later in the day, called for closer economic and trade relations
between the two neighbours.
Yawer commended Badran for being the first Arab leader to visit Iraq since the
fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in April 2003.
“We were delighted and honoured by the recent visit to Iraq “ Yawer said.
Referring to the situation in Iraq, Yawer said the main problem facing the
country stems from the presence of terrorists who pose a danger to Iraq and the
whole region.
There is dire need for close cooperation with Iraq's neighbours, especially
Jordan, to deal with terrorism, which is hampering efforts to establish Iraq as
a state of institutions, the vice president said.
Iraq is scheduled to hold a referendum on Oct. 15 on the country's new draft
constitution.
Acting Foreign Minister Alia Hattough-Bouran and Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan Atta
Abdul Wahab were also present at the Royal Court meeting.
