Conference participants denounce Pope’s remarks
AMMAN (Petra) — Participants in a conference entitled “Amman Message in the Eyes of Others” on Thursday denounced the remarks made by Pope Benedict XVI on Islam. Intellectuals, opinion leaders and academics from various countries attended the conference, which ended today. Princess Maria Teresa de Borbón of Spain said Islam condemns violence, while Vincent Legrand, a professor of political sciences at Université Libre de Bruxelles, said Islamic movements such as the one in Jordan, which respect the state and observe the law, are distant from the accusations made about Islam in the aftermath of Sept. 11 attacks. Meanwhile, Baroness Uddin, a member in the House of Lords at the British Parliament, disagreed with the Pope’s remarks on Islam, saying the faith is about tolerance and justice.
