Abducted Jordanian released
AMMAN (AFP) — A Jordanian abducted in Iraq about a month ago has been released, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday, citing the man's relatives.
Relatives of Nidal Kanani, who was seized in
early August by a group calling itself the Brigades of Martyrs of Iraq and
demanding ransom for his release, said he was freed on Tuesday, the spokesman
told AFP.
But the spokesman said he could not immediately confirm the release of Kanani
because "he has not arrived yet at the (Jordanian) embassy," in Baghdad.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman was not able to say if a ransom was paid for
Kanani's release.
The hostage's father Taleb Kanani was quoted by the press last month as that his
28-year-old son worked in a hotel in southern Jordan before going to Iraq "to
collect debts."
The Brigades of Martyrs of Iraq announced on an Islamic website in August the
kidnapping of a Jordanian and a Kenyan in Iraq, accusing them of cooperating
with US forces. It did not give further details.
