FM delivers King's message to Assad
AMMAN (JT & AFP) — Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib returned from Damascus on Monday after a brief visit during which he delivered a message from His Majesty King Abdullah to President Bashar Assad in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States, Jordanian officials said. The letter, focuses on “uniting Arab efforts to combat terrorism, particularly as the Syrian president was among the first Arab leaders to denounce the terror attacks” on New York and Washington, they added.
The message comes as the King prepares to fly to Washington on Wednesday for talks with US President George W. Bush on world efforts under way to combat terrorism following the Sept. 11 strikes.
Meanwhile, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal arrived here Monday evening for talks on the Middle East in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
According to an official source, during the unscheduled two-day visit the prince will have talks with senior officials “on the latest developments in the regional situation following the terrorist attacks.”
“Ways of strengthening bilateral relations will also be reviewed,” the source added.
The prince's last visit to Amman was on Sept. 5.
Last week he made a trip to Washington, where he warned against a rift developing between the West and the Islamic world over the fight against terrorism.
