Jordan plans to host
conference of Iraq neighbours
By Khalid Dalal
AMMAN — Jordan plans to host a conference of Iraq's neighbours in the next few
months, but it was still studying the possibility of holding another meeting on
the conflict-hit country's elections, a senior official said on Monday.
Minister of State and Government Spokesperson Asma Khader told a press conference that Iraq's neighbouring countries are scheduled to meet “between mid-November and early December.” A Foreign Ministry spokesperson told AFP that Amman had not received a request from the US to convene an international conference on the Iraqi elections. Khader said the meeting on elections issue was being discussed but there has been no final decision yet.
“Everything is possible,” she added. Speaking Sunday on CNN's “Late Edition,” US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Iraq would organise an international conference late October seeking out foreign support in the effort to rebuild and restore order in the country. “There are a couple of cities that are being considered — Amman and Cairo — there may be other places,” he said.
