Jordan welcomes Bush's backing of Palestinian state as 'big progress'

AMMAN (AFP) — Jordan on Tuesday welcomed US President George W. Bush's implicit support for a Palestinian state as “big progress” in the American administration's policies on the Middle East.

“This is a good position and big progress from America towards the Palestinian cause, and it corresponds with the discussions His Majesty King Abdullah had recently with President Bush,” Information Minister Saleh Qallab told AFP.

He said Bush's announcement “also corresponds with a letter that His Majesty had sent to the American president on Sept. 8 concerning the Palestinian cause and the need to resolve it quickly on the basis of international legislation and the agreements reached between the Palestinians and the Israelis.”

The King met with Bush last Friday in Washington.
