PM, Abbas discuss
Palestinian situation
AMMAN (JT) — Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Monday met with Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the outcome of his recent Gulf tour and
internal violence in the Palestinian lands, the Jordan News Agency, Petra,
reported.
Abbas concluded a four-day Gulf tour on Saturday, which took him to Qatar and
Kuwait.
The Palestinian president and Bakhit stressed the need for the Palestinian
Authority to receive financial support so it can meet its commitments, including
the salaries of employees, adding that such support would help calm the
situation in the Palestinian territories.
They also discussed ways to revive the Mideast peace process, especially in
light of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s upcoming visit to the region.
Bakhit briefed Abbas on the outcome of His Majesty King Abdullah’s talks with
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday.
The Monarch and Mubarak said they backed Palestinian efforts to form a national
unity government, which would adopt a unified stand on the peace process.
Urging self-restraint and an end to the confrontations, they warned against the
grave consequences of internal Palestinian fighting and its adverse effects on
the Palestinians and their cause.
They urged the international community to resume channelling economic aid to the
Palestinians, who are facing harsh conditions.
