New coin in circulation
AMMAN (AP) — New coins in circulation as of Wednesday bear the profile of His Majesty King Abdullah, replacing the face of King Hussein, an official of the Central Bank of Jordan said. The new copper coin, widely known as qirsh, is of the denomination of JD0.01 (1.4 US cents). The Jordanian dinar is made of 100 qirsh.
The old qirsh will continue to be a legal tender until it is completely collected from the market, added the official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity.
On the new qirsh, King Abdullah's face is engraved on one side and the Gregorian and Islamic calendar years — 2001 and 1421 respectively — on the opposite side.
Last month, the Central Bank said it will soon circulate JD1 banknotes to replace the coins that Jordanians find too heavy. The new notes will also bear the image of King Abdullah.
