Khatib attends
Cairo meeting
CAIRO (Petra) — Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul Ilah Khatib on Tuesday
underlined the need to take quick and effective action to find a just and
comprehensive solution for the Palestinian issue, which is the core issue in the
Middle East. The minister made the remarks during a meeting yesterday that
brought together US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and foreign ministers of
Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Khatib said the state of
instability in the Palestinian territories, a result of the occupation and
Israeli practices against the Palestinians, is the real cause for violence,
confusion and insecurity in the Middle East. Creating a just and comprehensive
solution for the Palestinian issue would enable countries in the region to deal
with the other challenges facing them, Khatib said, stressing the need to end
the Israeli occupation and guarantee the Palestinians their right to establish
an independent and viable state on their national soil with Jerusalem as its
capital. Also yesterday, Khatib met with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmad Abul
Gheit and discussed means of activating the Middle East peace process as well as
the latest developments in the Palestinian territories.
