Premier discusses labour
issues with officials
Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Wednesday chaired a meeting at the Ministry of
Labour to discuss the situation of guest labourers in Jordan and policies to
replace foreign workers with Jordanians as a means to alleviate poverty and
unemployment. During the meeting, which was attended by several ministers, the
officials reviewed the findings of a survey conducted by the University of
Jordan’s Centre of Strategic Studies (CSS) on the issue. The CSS focused on the
effect of a decision to hike work permit fees on prospects of job creation for
local workers. The study showed that Jordanians are willing to work in most of
the jobs currently occupied by non-Jordanians.
