Relief aid heads to
Pakistan today
AMMAN (Petra) — Upon His Majesty King Abdullah's directives, two military
aircraft laden with emergency humanitarian aid will head to Pakistan today, a
Civil Defence Department team will accompany the shipment of relief aid to help
in rescue efforts. Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdul Salam Abbadi said
the assistance includes tents, blankets, drugs and foodstuff. A huge earthquake
measuring at least 7.6 on the Richter scale shook South Asia on Saturday,
killing nearly 20,000 people and injuring more than 42,000, Agence France-Presse
reported. Pakistan, worst hit by the quake that also struck India and
Afghanistan, said Sunday more than 19,000 people had died in the biggest tragedy
in the country's history.
