Workshop to tackle three Millennium Development Goals

AMMAN (JT) — On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), the National Network for Poverty Alleviation, in cooperation with the Families Development Association, will organise a one-day workshop today.

Minister of State and Government Spokesperson Asma Khader will act as patron of the three-session workshop, which will cover three of the eight ambitious Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): Sustainable environment, maternal health and gender equality and women empowerment, in connection with the eradication of poverty.

Khader, who received the UNDP Poverty Eradication Award 2003 for her efforts to advance the MDGs, and the founder of the National Network for Poverty Alleviation, will deliver the keynote address during the official opening of the workshop, according to a UNDP statement.

UNDP Resident Representative, ad interim, Mona Hider, Ibrahim Hjouj of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and Miyasser Al Saadi, head of the Families Development Association and IDEP 1998 awardee, will also address the opening.

A presentation will also be given on the progress under the Jordan Poverty Alleviation Strategy.

Each year since 1993, countries around the world commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Oct. 17.

Events are organised around this day with the intention of calling the attention of policy makers, implementers, donors and the whole population — including the poor and the non-poor — to the issue of poverty and to the need to address poverty as a matter of urgency.

This year's IDEP worldwide theme is “Youth — A new voice for the Millennium Development Goals,” which presents a great challenge to the young community whose leadership qualities and determination would make a difference towards achieving the MDGs by 2015.
