Khatib reviews regional situation with EU ambassadors
AMMAN (Petra) — Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul
Ilah Khatib reviewed the situation in the region and efforts exerted by His
Majesty King Abdullah to highlight the importance of the Palestinian issue, in
separate meetings with ambassadors of the EU countries and Palestinian officials
on Thursday.
The minister underlined the necessity for the international community to exert
efforts to bring the Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiating table in
order to arrive at a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in
a manner that guarantees the Palestinians their rights in establishing an
independent and viable state on their national soil with Jerusalem as its
capital.
Khatib reiterated King Abdullah’s call to extend support to the Palestinians and
urge them to put an end to their internal differences.
He stressed Jordan’s keenness to bring to an end the suffering of the
Palestinians, and not to deprive them from realising their national goals.
The minister said he appreciated the position of the European countries during
the recent UN Security Council meeting in New York, and urged the EU to play a
more active role in efforts to revive the peace process.
During his meeting with Palestinian Peoples’ Party Secretary General and
Palestinian Legislation Council Member Bassam Salhi and his colleague Hanna
Amirah, Khatib discussed the situation in the Palestinian territories and
efforts to tackle the current tense situation.
The foreign minister underlined the importance of Palestinians joining ranks to
preserve the unity and interests of the people.
