National Plan of Action for
Children to be launched
AMMAN (JT) — The Jordanian National Plan of Action for Children for the years
(2004-2013) will be launched by Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania on
Monday.
The plan is the Kingdom's blueprint for the next 10 years in childhood-related
fields: Health, education, protection, media and monitoring, according to a
statement released yesterday by the National Council for Family Affairs (NCFA)
and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
It builds on the achievements of the previous National Plan of Action
(1993-2000), and “A World Fit for Children” declaration, which is a framework
for children and young people with set goals.
The Kingdom signed this document in 2002 at the United Nations Special Session
on Children and was among the 190 states that committed their governments to
this declaration and promised to work on their own national plans for children.
Jordan's national plan is also based on the Arab Plan of Action for Children
endorsed at the Third Arab Congress on Child's Rights in Tunisia this year.
The action plan has been developed by more than 200 experts working for and with
children in the country. For over a year now, ministries, NGOs, and the private
sector have worked on drafting, reviewing, discussing and agreeing on the final
plan.
The process was spearheaded by the NCFA, the Ministry of Planning and
International Cooperation, and UNICEF.
The plan is in line with the commitments the Kingdom made to the national
strategy and plan of action for Early Childhood and Development, the child
labour strategy, the draft youth strategy and recommendations of the study on
disadvantaged children.
