King commends MoICT's
contribution to socio-economic development
AMMAN (JT) — His Majesty King Abdullah said team work, development of potential
and innovation were the keys to organised institutional work.
The King's remarks were made yesterday during a visit to the Ministry of
Information and Comm- unications Technology (MoICT), where he commended the
MoICT's efforts to galvanise the ICT market and its contribution to the
socio-economic development of the country. He cited the e-government and the
e-learning initiatives as key components of this contribution.
The King was briefed by senior ministry officials on partnerships the MoICT has
entered with the private sector and universities with regard to the two
initiatives, and toured the ministry's facilities.
Minister of ICT Fawaz Zu'bi acquainted the King with the just-started second
phase of the “Secure Government Network” (SGN) that will connect 12 governmental
departments by April 2005. The plan is designed to increase coordination, reduce
bureaucracy and provide the adequate infrastructure for future e-government
services.
The 12 departments will also be linked with six departments that were connected
during the first phase of the SGN.
He also reviewed progress on the e-government plan and efforts the ministry is
exerting to open up the local communications market to free competition, with
the goal of attracting more investment to the Kingdom.
