Jordan selected as host of
next NATO PA seminar
AMMAN (JT) — Participants in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) 10th
Mediterranean Seminar held in Nouakchott selected Jordan as the host of its next
session, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The assembly, which took place between Oct. 17-19, handed an official request to
Senator Jihad Momani, who represented Jordan in the session. The senator was due
to forward the letter to President of the Senate Zeid Rifai, Petra said.
Jordan, along with several non-NATO countries, holds observer status at the
assembly.
According to a press release published by the NATO PA on its website, the
session discussed security and development in the Sahara-Sahel region, the
compatibility and coexistence of Islam and democracy, now a regular theme in
NATO PA Mediterranean seminars and the democratic and developmental changes in
Mauritania.
Participants also discussed the Arab-Israeli conflict. In response to a
“provocative remark” by Arab Israeli member of Knesset, Ayyoub Qara, who is a
member of the ruling Likud Party, Petra said, Momani highlighted “several
Israeli violations of the peace treaty signed with Jordan,” a decade ago.
He also underlined the perils inherent in the construction of the separation
barrier in the West Bank and the consequences of such an Israeli plan on the
peace process and Jordan's interests.
In addition Momani noted the “potential danger” of Israel's Dimona nuclear
reactor on Jordanians and the people of the region in general.
