Mayor to unveil monument
to terror victims
By Khalid Neimat
AMMAN — Jordan will mark the first anniversary of the Amman bombings on Thursday
with several commemorative events, including the unveiling of a monument to the
victims at the newly named Amman Martyrs Site in Deir Ghbar.
Amman Mayor Omar Maani will unveil the monument, located at the centre of the
site, in a ceremony scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
The monument is inscribed with the names of the 60 victims of the attacks, who
were killed when suicide bombers blew themselves up at three separate hotels in
the capital on November 9, 2005.
One of the streets adjacent to the site has been named Amman Martyrs Street in
honour of the victims, while another has been dedicated to the memory of Syrian
film director Mustafa Aqqad, one of those killed.
A major commemoration will also take place at the Nakheel site near the
headquarters of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), and will include a short
film in commemoration of the victims, the GAM Press Centre told reporters
yesterday, adding that the event will also be screened live on Jordan
Television.
During the event, renowned Jordanian poet Haydar Mahmoud will read an ode in
honour of the victims. The event is being billed as a chance for Jordanians from
all walks of life to express their sympathies for the victims and their
relatives and demonstrate their renunciation of terrorism.
Meanwhile, the Culture Ministry on Tuesday said it will also host a memorial
event focusing on the life and achievements of Aqqad on November 10 at the Royal
Culture Centre.
