Protesters condemn suicide
attacks
Thomas Gringer Jakobsen
AMMAN — Hundreds of people marched through Jabal
Amman Thursday to vent their outrage at the suicide bombings that rocked three
of the capital's hotels on Wednesday night.
At the Third Circle, around 500 people gathered, many sporting their red
kuffiyehs and hoisting banners.
Both young and old marched in the demonstration that took place in the vicinity
of the Grand Hyatt and Radisson SAS hotels, both targets of Wednesday's attacks.
Ali Yousef, a grocer who hails from Jerusalem, said he had come specifically to
be a part of the demonstration.
I'm working in support of King Abdullah,” shouted Yousuf, while demonstrators in
the background hollered and whistled and waved posters of the Monarch.
“He is like the father of the country,” Yousef said, before his voice was swept
away by cheers and chants from the throngs of people.
Many of the participants had brought along their children, who eagerly waved
small Jordanian flags or wrapped national banner bandanas around their heads.
One mother was said she was encouraged to take part in the march by her 12- and
10-year-old daughters.
“I was actually reluctant to march today,” said the girls' mother Rania Hineidi,
who works as a secretary at UNRWA.
“But my daughters insisted. They were so shocked when they saw the news on
television last night. We were truly horrified,” Hineidi said, as she helped her
children to the sidewalk to get them out of the way of a large group of
demonstrators streaming past and shouting support for the King, Jordanian unity
and an end to terrorist attacks.
“There have been so many planned attacks before, and they have been thwarted by
the police. But this time they [the terrorists] are targeting not the goverment,
but completely ordinary and defenceless people! This is totally against our
religion, which is a religion of peace, and this is one of the messages I want
to send by marching today,” said the young mother.
At one of the hotels lining the road, — group of American tourists were getting
ready to return to the US on an evening flight.
One of them, a retired electrician, Adam Olszewski, who had seen the groups of
demonstrators passing by.
“They're now setting up metal detectors in this hotel too, just like everywhere
in Egypt, where we were a week ago. I'm not afraid, but it makes me worried to
see that kind of security measure being implemented. But on the other hand, you
can't run and hide all your life, “ he said.
“I'm glad we came here to Jordan, it's a fantastic country. I might be back in
some years' time, when everything has calmed down. But maybe things have to get
worse before they get better,” mused Olszewski.
