Jordan remembers King
Hussein
Jordan today marks the anniversary of the birth of King Hussein. Born on
November 14, 1935 to King Talal Ben Abdullah and Queen Zein Al Sharaf, Hussein
was proclaimed King of Jordan on August 11, 1952 and assumed his constitutional
powers on May 2, 1953. Throughout 47-year reign, King Hussein worked for the
development of Jordan, peace in the region, democracy, civil liberties and human
rights. At the time of his death on February 7, 1999, King Hussein was the
longest serving executive head of state in the world.
