Lower House committee
briefs UN team on Israeli abuse in occupied territories
AMMAN (Petra) — Members of the Lower House Palestinian Committee on Thursday met
with a UN fact-finding team to highlight Israeli violations in the Palestinian
territories. Head of the panel, MP Younis Jamra (Irbid, First District) urged
the UN to continue monitoring and investigating Israel’s practices and abuses of
human rights. Head of the delegation, Sri Lanka’s permanent representative to
the UN, Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam, said that although the panel was formed
about four decades ago, it has never been allowed into Palestinian areas due to
a ban imposed by Israel. He said the committee, which is currently on a regional
tour, relies on testimonies by witnesses to compile its reports. In its latest
report to the UN General Assembly, the panel recommended sanctions on Israel for
its failure to respect international humanitarian law.
