King Meets Palestinian President
Amman, Nov. 28 (Petra)—His Majesty king Abdullah
II said that the need of the region’s peoples to achieve genuine progress in the
peace process that ends the cycle of violence and enhance the opportunity of
achieving peace between the Palestinians and Israelis, is greater today than
ever before.
During a meeting with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the King urged
the international community and the concerned parties to work towards a quick
resumption of talks between the Palestinians and Israelis.
The King’s meeting with Abbas comes ahead of the summit meeting between His
Majesty the US President George Bush in Amman. It also comes within His
Majesty’s continued efforts to rally support for the Palestinian issue, which
will be a major topic for discussion with President Bush.
His Majesty said that aspirations of the region’s peoples in security and
stability will only be achieved if Palestinians and Israelis return to the
negotiating table. He affirmed Jordan’s support to Arab, regional and
international efforts designed to achieve progress in the peace process.
The King made it clear that the Arab peace initiative, which is based of the
land for peace formula, forms a relevant frame for the establishment of
comprehensive and permanent peace in the region.
He said unilateral solutions, which have failed, contradict efforts to achieve
comprehensive peace in the region.
The King underlined the need to resort to the language of dialogue and logic
instead of threats and violence.
He affirmed Jordan will exert efforts on all levels in coordination with Arab
and European countries to facilitate the process of providing economic aid to
the Palestinians to enable them to overcome the difficult conditions they are
facing.
President Abbas for his part describe the initiative of the Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert to resume peace talks with the Palestinians and withdraw
from major parts of the Palestinian lands as positive.
He said the Palestinian Authority would issue a statement later on its stance on
this initiative.
