Government closes in on desalination plant deal with FarWest
AMMAN (J.T.) The government has confirmed that the U.S.-based FarWest Group Inc. will complete a multi-step contract for a brackish water desalination plant in the Kingdom, according to a statement by FarWest.
FarWest has received a partnership letter of intent from Jordan, and the final terms and conditions of the contract are now being completed, says the statement.
The water treatment system will be installed in the Kafrein area of Jordan near Amman, drawing water from brackish wells that will be drilled in the area.
The planned facility will use FarWest's capacitive deionisation technology (CDT), and in its first phase will produce 400 cubic metres of drinking water per day. The second phase will produce up to 100,000 cubic metres of drinking water per day.
Phase one is scheduled to begin in May 2000. The completion of successful operations will trigger the establishment of the second stage, a 100,000-cubic metre per day production plant, says the statement.
In addition to the pilot and production CDT system, FarWest and Jordan are evaluating a joint venture to establish a manufacturing assembly facility in the Kingdom to provide such systems and services to other Middle East countries.
FarWest is the licensee of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's patented CDT system.
The firm develops, manufactures and markets technology for water purification applications, including desalination and brackish water filtration, boiler water polishing, pure/ultra pure systems for electronic, medical and food production as well as groundwater remediation. The technology can even be used in the removal of nuclear elements.
