Work starts on cable to supply electricity to Iraq
AMMAN (Petra) Work has started on laying a 132-kilovolt cable to supply Iraq with electricity. The cable will extend a distance of 170 kilometres from the Risheh power station, close to the Iraqi border, to the Akashat power station in western Iraq. According to Ahmad Hiyasat, director of the National Electric Power Company, the cable will be completed by 2006 and Iraq will receive electric power generated in Jordan by the natural gas imported from Egypt. Hiyasat said the project is not related to the planned regional electricity network to link Arab states with Turkey. Hiyasat noted that the inter-Arab-Turkish network is proceeding as planned.
