Jordan to Take Part in Arab Women Meetings
Meetings of the 29th session of the Arab
Women Committee started at the headquarters of the Secretariat
General of the Arab League in Cairo.
The Jordanian delegation to the meetings is led by Deputy
President and Secretary General of the National Council for Women
Affairs Dr. Ruwaidah Maayteh.
Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League Nancy Bakir said
in an opening speech that despite progress achieved in the
educational field in the Arab world, more than half of Arab women
are still unable to read or write.
"Empowering women should expand to enhance their status to be equal to men in the cultural, social and political fields," she added. The session will discuss 15 items dealing with women and family affairs, foremost of which are the Arab strategy for family, the status of women in constitutions and Arab laws, and the implementation of the objectives of the unified Arab statement on family rights and the Arab strategy for family. The meetings will also review the status of Palestinian women and the importance of supporting Arab and international efforts that aim at releasing Palestinian female prisoners form Israeli jails.
