Conference to address media, gov't relations

By Mohammad Ben Hussein

AMMAN — A national media conference will take place early next year to enhance cooperation between the country's media and the government, the Jordan Information Centre (JIC) said on Wednesday.

The centre is currently preparing “two brainstorming sessions with journalists, media experts and academics to come up with an agenda for the conference that covers most of Jordan's thorny issues,” according to head of JIC Bassel Tarawneh.

“Our aim was to include local media experts and journalists in the preparation process for the conference, as they are the best side to know the proper issues that need discussion,” Tarawneh told The Jordan Times.

The three-day conference, slated for late February, will address several local issues from the media's perspective, including the right to obtain information.

“We will also discuss what is needed from the local media and what is also needed from the government to have a healthy media environment in the country,” Tarawneh added.

Another topic on the agenda is fighting terrorism and extreme Islamic ideologies, he said.

The anti-terrorism issue comes in light of the recent attacks on three Amman hotels in which 60 people were killed and scores were injured.
