AMMAN CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY

The Amman Chamber of Industry ( ACI ) is a leading Jordanian institution declicated to the development of Jordan's industrial sector through product promotion, providing market information and identifying investment opportunities. The ACI provides a wide range of services including round-table investment seminars, commodity exhibitions, and trade missions.

ACI also conducts research and provides legislative and other financial and economic information. ACI maintains a permanent exhibition of Jordanian industrial products and publishes a comprehensive directory of Jordanian manufactures.

THE JORDANIAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION (JBA)

Established in 1985 as an independent, non-profit organization, the Jordanian Businessmen Association was set up to create and maintain a -business climate that enables the private sector to accomplish its role in the continuing development of Jordan's economic and business future. It is also concerned with the activation of the Jordanian private sector in cooperation and coordination with the Federation of Jordanian Chambers of Commerce and Chambers of Industry and other private sector institutions.

The association is also a consultative body representing the private sector before the government and receives missions of foreign business communities which visit Jordan. The association forms quite a large core of the private sector which qualifies it to act as the single unified spokesman for Jordanian businessmen in communications and meetings with similar foreign businessmen associations. In addition to these activities, JBA conducts studies on the Jordanian investment laws and regulations and issues books relating to investment and development.

The Jordanian Businessmen Association is also involved in opening dialogues with business communities in the advanced industrialized countries and other economic groups such as the EEEC and other Arab and foreign countries. It has established joint business councils with similar organization in each of Egypt, Canada, France, Britain, Spain, Turkey, Malaysia, and Syria.

JORDAN EXPORT DEVELOPMENT AND COMMERICAL CENTERS CORPORATION (JEDCO)

JEDCO is a semi-governmental body mandated with developing and promoting national exports. It works to fulfill its objectives through upgrading technical know-how and product quality, and penetrating new markets. Among its wide range of activities, JEDCO organizes exhibitions locally and internationally, arranges inward and outward trade missions, conducts market research and supervises the implementation of trade protocols.

JEDCO is also the host organization of the Euro Info Correspondence Center in Jordan (EICC). EICC Jordan aims at enhancing business relations between small and medium size companies in Jordan and the European Union in addition to other countries in the EICC network. In order to achieve this objective, EICC Jordan undertakes to provide SMEs regulations governing trade between statistical date on trade opportunities. Through its computerized net works the center assists SMEs in locating forwards any business information or activity that might be of value to European and Jordanian SMEs.

JORDAN TRADE ASSOCIATION ( JTA )

The Jordan Trade Association is private non-profit organization established in 1988 in order to assist Jordanian businesses in their quest to develop international trade, and in the promotion of Jordanian exports worldwide. JTA represents leading manufacturing and service concerns from various sectors of the Jordanian economy. It has enabled Jordanian exporters, through its various activities, identify new marketing opportunities for their goods and services and to advance their distribution into non-traditional markets.

The Jordan Trade Association provides businesses with international links by organizing and arranging the participation of Jordanian companies in exhibition, fairs, and trade missions around the world. JTA also connects Jordanian companies with various global business organization and trade promotion centers. To keep Jordanian firms up-to-date, the association conducts market studies with the international business and economic communityand publishes a number of materials for foreign and local distribution including a quarterly newsletter, directories, and special market reports.

JTA has also acquired new computerized information with international linkage.

JORDANIAN CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION

The Construction Contractors Association was established in order to regulate and organize the construction industry. The association's activities include cooperation with concerned parties for the development of the means and methods of projects planning, contract documentation and carrying out construction work.

The Association is also active in organizing the constructing profession and upgrading it both on the academic and practical levels. Some of the Association's duties include submitting recommendations to the Ministry for the amendment of laws, issuing regulation and directs relating to construction, preventing unlawful competition, assuring the use of local resources, materials and expertise, and recording and circulating information relating to the profession. The association is also involved in the issuance of magazines and periodicals pertaining to construction.

THE ASSOCIATION OF BANKS IN JORDAN

The Association of Banks in Jordan is made up of prominent banks in Jordan and includes active members comprising licensed banks, financial companies and specialized credit institutions, and associate members, comprising representative offices.

The Association was established in 1978 with a clear objective of improving the banking service and profession, serving and strengthening the national economy, and exchanging information and expertise among the banks. The Association of Banks in Jordan aims at improving the banking service through standardizing banking forms and activities, developing and modernizing the banking service, and establishing institutions and centers for banking training and studies. The association also aims at fostering cooperation with the Central Bank of Jordan through implementation of the monetary and banking policy set by the bank.

The Association of Banks in Jordan is also involved in publishing specialized bulletins and periodicals, and in organizing seminars, panel discussions, and lectures on economic issues in general and banking topics in particular.

It is also involved in preparing and circulating studies and research related to banking services and in rendering advisory services to its members in their different fields.

FEDERATION OF JORDANIAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE (FJCC)

The Federation of Jordanian Chambers of Commerce (FJCC) was established as a private sector representative in December 1995. It provides an umbrella for 15 Chambers of Commerce spread throughout Jordan, and provides its services to a community of 70,000 members engaged in various trading and business activities all around the Kingdom. The Federation's primary responsibility is to achieve a balanced economy, steer the state's foreign economic relations and strive economic integration with the public sector bodies.

FJCC's objectives are to engage in public economic / commercial affairs and harmonize the operational policies of its member chambers to serve the Federation's aims; to participate in local and international conferences and exhibitions; to gather and circulate streamlining economic / commercial data & statistics on Jordan; to utilize its capabilities and resources to cooperate with Jordanian official bodies to develop the Jordanian trade and economic system; to act as the "official representative" of its members; and to publish a business bulletin called "Economic Bulletin".

FJCC is privileged to be a member of various local, Arab and international institutions and organizations.

JORDAN EUROPE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

The Jordan Europe Business Association (JEBA) is a non-profit organization founded in early 1996 with the aim of enhancing business relations between Jordan and the countries of the European Union (EU). The Association's objectives include promoting contracts and cooperation between the Jordanian private sector and counterparts in the EU countries, familiarizing Jordan's private sector with EU programs (especially Med-Partenariat), and encouraging participation in these and similar activities. JEBA's Honorary President is Prince Firas bin Raad. The Association is run by a managing board of seven members elected for a two-year term.

The Association's first year has been marked by a variety of events targeting the Jordanian-EU business relations. Among many other activities in 1996, these have included the following:

1. Receiving an important group of businesspersons from the Spanish region of Catalonia, led by the Fundacio Empresa Catalunya, Europa i America of Barcelona, who visited Jordan in February.

2. Holding a reception in honor of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry delegation visiting Amman in September.

3. Conducting a working meeting with leading French public and private sector representatives in Amman in October.

4. Meeting with the British Executive Service Overseas regional director for the Middle East in December.

JEBA's plans for 1997 include many similar activities, as well as full support for the major Medpartenariat event set to take place in Amman in July.

FRIENDS OF ENVIRONMENT SOCIETY

Founded in 1994, FOE is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization. It is funded by donations from the business community, individuals, organizations as well as membership fees. FOE's principal objective is to create an environmentally aware generation by encouraging creativity and innovation among students, when trying to solve environmentalproblems that face our communities and the surrounding environment. The Society's activities revolve around emphasizing the important role of the private sector in supporting the various NGO's in Jordan, especially since the Kingdom has been devoting more attention to environmentally sound businesses in Jordan and around the world. FOE has committed itself to guide the private sector in their mission to help protect the environment. The society achieves this by encouraging the participation of local firms and businesses in efforts to increase environmental awareness and also by encouraging the local business community to contribute to projects aimed at supporting student environmental action.

The Friends of Environment Society consists of five committees, namely: Public Relations and Fund Raising Committee, Media and Information Committee, Technical Committee and School Follow Up Committee.

Among the Society's objectives are the following:

* Encouraging the participation of local firms and businesses in efforts to increase environmental awareness.

* Promote the utilization of natural and renewable energies such as wind, water and solar and set up environmentally sound projects that will serve the country and promote sustainable development by preserving Jordan's economic resources.

* Providing training for the younger generation and enhance the spirit of teamwork in addressing national environmental concerns.

* Creating an environmentally aware generation.
