Jordan’s position regarding the US military action in Afghanistan
Jordan has strongly condemned the terrorist
attacks against the US on September 11th and has expressed its support for the
US military action that followed. Jordan also urged the US to limit the threat
posed by such military action on innocent civilians in Afghanistan. Jordan also
noted that any military action against terrorism should not be used to target
Arab states.
Jordan also stressed the importance of treating the sources of extremism and
radicalism throughout the region and fostering understanding and mutual respect
between different cultures. Jordan was the first and only Arab country to be
involved in multinational effort in Afghanistan. The Jordanian army has deployed
a field hospital in Kandahar and its doctors have treated thousands of civilians
in the war-ravaged country.
Jordan will continue to fight terrorism and its
perpetrators with all possible means. Security and stability are the country's
top priority and no terrorist individual or organization will be tolerated.
Jordan stresses the need to confront all ill motivated attempts aiming at
connecting Islam with terrorism, and at holding Arabs and Muslims responsible
for terror attacks or for any other form of international terrorism In this
regard, Jordan maintains that terrorism is a global phenomenon and that its
causes and motivations are religiously and culturally neutral.
Jordan views Terrorism as defying the teachings of Islam and the culture of
modern society. Islam is not only a religion but also a way of life, where the
principles of tolerance and dialogue prevail. The bond between religion and
peace should be strengthened as a key for eradicating fundamentalism.
Jordan has taken concrete steps in fighting terrorism at the national
legislative level, practical security measures, and international conventions
and treaties on combating terrorism.
On April 5, 2010, during an interview by Wall Street Journal,
His Majesty King Abdullah II stressed that "Jordan is playing
a more vital role in stability building in Afghanistan as a
Muslim nation reaching out to help the development of another
Muslim nation." [see

His Majesty also added that "this is something we are trying
to negotiate with the Afghan government: How do we support the
Afghans in transforming their lives. There has been interest
from the European Union and the US to bring Afghan police and
soldiers to be trained here. We have excellent facilities and
we've had tremendous experience doing it with Palestinians and
Iraqis." [see

On March 25, 2010, during an interview by chief editors of
The Jordan Times, Al Rai, Ad Dustour, Al Arab Al Yawm and Al
Ghad, His Majesty reiterated that Jordan will "protect our
citizens and ensure our security against any terrorist acts by
any side. We all remember the heinous crimes that were committed
by terrorists against innocent civilians in Amman on November 9,
2005 when we lost 60 people and more than 100 were injured.
Jordan has been the target of terrorism for years and even
before the hotel attacks. And I have said that we will protect
our country and will not wait for the terrorists to come to us
and to kill our children. But we will hunt down every one who
plans to attack our country and our people wherever they may be.
I am proud of our security forces and of their efforts to
protect the country against terror. Terrorism is the enemy of
Jordan and the Arabs and humanity and primarily the enemy of our
religion that is innocent of all the crimes committed by
terrorists and that are alien to our faith and its message of
tolerance."
His Majesty also stressed that "It is our duty to protect our
religion from attempts to distort its image, and as you know
Jordan has worked throughout the past years to fight terror
ideologically and culturally through many initiatives including
the Amman Message that you have mentioned and that was launched
in 2004 to outline the great values of Islam. There is also “A
Common Word” that was launched in Jordan to bring the followers
of monotheistic religions closer. We will continue to fight the
terrorist ideology through presenting the true image of our
religion and its values and you as media have a major role in
fighting terror and exposing it and guarding society against it.
Frankly, you should make a bigger effort to confront attempts by
terrorists to mislead youth and to distort the image of our
faith and just causes." [see
