Biography
Feisal Ibn Al-Hussein, born in October 1963, as the second son
to His Majesty King Hussein Ibn Talal and HRH Princess Muna
Al-Hussein (Formerly Miss Tony Gardiner).
Feisal began his education in 1965 at the Islamic College in
Amman, Jordan. In 1970, Feisal joined his older brother, HRH Prince
Abdullah at St. Edmund’s School in Surrey, England. In 1971,
Feisal and his brother began their studies in the United States. He
attended two years at Bement School in Deerfield Massachusetts
before joining his brother at Eaglebrook School (also in Deerfield,
Massachusetts). Graduating from Eaglebrook in 1978, Feisal
completed his high school education at St. Albans School in
Washington, D.C. graduating in 1981. Following high school, he
attended Brown University in Providence Rhode Island, where he
obtained his bachelors (BSc) degree in electronic engineering
(specializing in communications), graduating in 1985.
Feisal began his flying training while at university in 1982,
obtaining his private pilot’s Licence that summer. In 1983, he
began his helicopter training with the Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF)
and obtained his military flying wings the following summer. After
graduating from university, Feisal immediately began his
professional military training with the Royal Air Force (RAF)
attending Initial Officer Training (earning his Commission in
November 1985) and Basic Flying Training at the RAF College
Cranwell, in Lincolnshire, England. He went on to complete his
Advance Flying Training at RAF Valley in Agnlesey, Wales where he
received his fast jet wings from His Majesty King Hussein in June
1987. Later that year, he went on to finish his last RAF flying
course at the Tactical Weapons Unit at Chivenor in Devon.
In the spring of 1988, Feisal joined No. 17 Squadron Operational
Conversion Unit (OCU) and began his conversion onto the Northrop F
– 5E/P. He later qualified as an instructor and began instructing
in OCU, in the summer of 1989. Suffering a slipped disc in December
1989, Feisal was forced to temporarily discontinue flying. In the
fall of 1990, Feisal was assigned to the Directorate of Air
Operations as a staff officer. In spring of 1992, Feisal completed
a ground instructor’s course at King Hussein Air College, in
Mafraq.
In November – December 1992, he attended the Basic Staff
Course (BSC) at RAI Staff College, Bracknell, in England. He
continued to work in the RJAF Directorate of Air Operations in
1993, while resuming some operational flying on the Northrop F-5F
while attached to the No. 6 Squadron.
After successfully completing his Advanced Staff Course (ASC) in
1994, again at the RAF Staff College Bracknell, Feisal was assigned
to Prince Hassan Air Base in early 1995, where he assumed command
of No. 6 Squadron. Following a year’s to as a squadron commander,
Feisal was reassigned to the Air Lift Wing in August 1996 where he
assumed the post of Operations Officer. In November 1998, Feisal
was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and in January 2999,
became the Commander of a new, joint headquarters, Combat Support
Command. In August 1999 Feisal was appointed as the Assistant for
Operations and Air Defense in the Royal Jordanian Air Force, and in
October 2001 was promoted to his present rank of Major General.
Starting March 20002, Major General Feisal assumed responsibility
of the Chief of Air Staff of Royal Jordanian Air Force.
Following his return from Staff College, Feisal was asked by the
Chairman of Royal Jordanian, to consult on the establishment of a
regional airline in Jordan. As a result of his work, the Board of
Royal Jordanian appointed Feisal in December 1995 as a supervisor
and advisor to Royal Wings, its new subsidiary where he continues
to play an active role in the development of the regional airline.
Feisal’s keen interest in flying has seen his involvement in
all aspects of aviation in Jordan. He also regularly attends and
has addressed international conferences on military and commercial
aviation. He has been vocal in his views on regional deregulation
of a commercial air travel.
Feisal enrolled in the International Executive Management
Program (a modular version of the International Sloane program) at
the London Business School in 1996 and completed his Masters of
Management in July 1998. He has recently been appointed as the
Chairman of the National Resources Development Company, as well as
a board member of the National Resources Investment Institute –
both of which work to develop and market resources of the Jordanian
Armed Forces.
Feisal continues pursuing his interest in technology, especially
in information technology, simulation and communications. He has
also worked with the development of policy in Jordan’s economic
restructuring, being a strong proponent for liberalization.
Feisal is the present chairman of the Motor Sport Executive
Council, president of the Jordanian Gliding Club, as well as being
involved in other sports, academic committees and clubs. In March
1999, he was appointed as the head of the Higher Organizing
Committee for the Nineth Pan Arab Games held in Jordan in August
1999, which involved participation of 4500 athletes from 21 nations
in 28 games for males and 19 games for females. In 2001, Feisal
chaired the Higher Organizing Committee of the first Arab Games for
Schools in Handball and Track and Field hosted in Amman in
September of the same year. He also headed the Higher
Organizational Committee for the Special Forces Exhibition (SOFEX
2000) held in Amman in April 2000.
