September 1, 2010
White House
Washington, DC
President Obama and King Abdullah met today and reaffirmed the
strong relationship between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the United
States of America.
President Obama thanked King Abdullah for his leadership and support for peace
in the region, and both leaders stated their strong support for the resumption
of direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and for comprehensive
peace in the region. They expressed their hope that the resumption of direct
negotiations will lead to two states living side-by-side in peace and security.
President Obama and King Abdullah consulted on the details of the launch event
for direct talks at the Department of State scheduled for tomorrow. The
President made clear that Jordan’s leadership will be needed to ensure that the
talks are successful, and reassured King Abdullah that the United States
believes that the only way to achieve peace between the Israelis and
Palestinians is through direct negotiations.
The leaders also discussed regional and bilateral issues, and committed to
seeking ways to strengthen the partnership between the United States and Jordan.
