King, Mubarak say truce hoped to improve life in Gaza

His Majesty King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday said they hope the Gaza truce would lead to a better life for residents of the coastal enclave.

They said at a meeting at the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh that the deal reached by Israel and Hamas, through an Egyptian mediation, would “lessen the suffering of the Palestinian people and lift the embargo on the Gaza Strip”.

They also expressed their support for President Mahmoud Abbas’ efforts to end division between Palestinians. (see story)

His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday said it would be a serious mistake to miss the opportunities at hand this year to make peace.

The ultimate goal, he said, is “to establish a sovereign, independent and viable Palestinian state... along with a secure and recognized Israel... in a region that is unified, at peace and ready to move forward”.

Addressing an array of more than 280 participants, including some 30 Nobel Prize winners, at the inauguration of the 4th Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates in the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, King Abdullah said that throughout Jordan, and across the region, millions of people want to be part of a stable, moderate, modern Middle East (see full text of speech II see full story).
