World Economic Forum Summit in Jordan

The World Economic Forum's (WEF) extraordinary meeting was held at the eastern shore of the Dead Sea June 21-23 2003.
The extraordinary meeting was attended by around 1,500 global economic, political, academic and religious leaders as well as media representatives from 65 countries, who engaged in various and diverse debates in the pursuit of launching new and hopeful initiatives for the Middle East. 

The extraordinary meeting was held under the theme: "Visions for a Shared Future."

His Majesty King Abdullah inaugurated the first ever-extraordinary meeting of the World Economic Forum urging Palestinians, Israelis and the international community to stay the course of Middle East peace. 

"The friends of peace within the region and around the world must stay the course," King Abdullah told The WEF community.

His Majesty King Abdullah also stressed the need to seize opportunities offered by the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting and another by the Mideast Quartet convened at the Dead Sea to advance the cause of peace.

Noting that the forum opens new horizons for cooperation between Jordan and international organizations, HM King Abdullah said in his meetings that dialogue and partnership constitute the basic confidence amongst world nations.

The King acquainted his guests with Jordan's experiment based on economic and political reforms that are prone to help the country proceed with its development plans.

During the three days of the conference, 71 sessions were held on the future of the Middle East and implementation of the roadmap for peace, challenges to the social, political and economic reconstruction of Iraq, the rehabilitation of the Palestinian economy and Middle Eastern business climate, as well as global economic trends.

The quartet representatives - US Secretary of State Colin Powell, EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov participated in the conference. Other participants in the summit include Ambassador Robert Zoellick, Ambassador Paul Brember III and a US Congressional delegation. Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who delivered a special address, Austrian President Thomas Klestil, Malta's President Guido de Marco and Latvia's President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, also attended the meeting.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Secretary General Lord Robertson, former Israeli Premier Shimon Peres, Arab League Secretary General Amr Musa, and International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Mohammad Al Baradei all attended the conference. Moreover, among the intellectuals taking part in panels during the event is celebrated Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho.
