Khatib holds talks with
US delegation
AMMAN (Petra) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul Ilah Khatib on Monday reviewed
the country’s stance on regional and international issues with a delegation from
the US House of Representatives. Khatib briefed the delegates on His Majesty
King Abdullah’s efforts to relaunch the peace process in accordance with a clear
timetable to establish an independent Palestinian state, bring an end to the
Arab-Israeli conflict and achieve regional security and stability. Khatib also
highlighted the importance of preparing for the upcoming peace conference.
Pointing out that the meeting might be the last opportunity for achieving peace,
he warned that failure would lead to more chaos and extremism in the region.
Referring to Iraq, Khatib said unity in the country is key to regional
stability, calling for increased efforts to help Iraqis reach national
reconciliation and to prevent interference in its internal affairs. The minister
also briefed the delegation on the economic and infrastructural pressures Jordan
is facing as a result of the massive influx of Iraqis. Highlighting the
country’s commitment to political and economic reform, Khatib said regional
challenges and developments will hinder the Kingdom’s reform process. The
delegates commended the Kingdom’s role in the region under the leadership of
King Abdullah and its efforts to achieve regional peace and stability.
