Jordan, Syria Sign
Meeting memo
Amman, Oct. 24 (Petra)—Jordan and Syria signed today meeting memo of the
preparatory committee of the 12th session of the Joint Jordanian-Syrian Higher
Committee.
The memo includes mechanisms to develop trade and economic ties and activate the
role of the private sector in socio-economic development.
It also includes cooperation in the fields of customs, standardization, free
zones, agriculture, water, transport, higher education, scientific research,
education, tourism and housing.
The memo was singed by Minister of Industry and Trade Salem Khazaaleh and Syrian
Economy and Trade Minister Amer Lutfi.
The memo highlighted the importance of economic and trade cooperation in
developing bilateral ties, diversifying trade exchange and implementing an
agreement related to the greater free trade Arab zone.
The two sides agreed to sign 12 agreements and memoranda of understanding as
well as an executive program in the fields of housing, construction, sports
industry, water, culture, education, social affairs, vocational training and
health.
In remarks at the signing ceremony, Khazaaleh said the volume of trade exchange
which amounted to JD450 million during the first eight months of this year,
reflects the level of both countries’ aspirations.
The minister urged Syrian businessmen to seize available investment
opportunities and set up joint projects with their Jordanian counterparts.
The Syrian minister for his part said the volume of trade exchange stood at JD
500 million last year, stressing the need of removing obstacles facing the flow
of goods between the two countries.
