Ceremony marks 2nd anniversary of Amman bombings

AMMAN (Petra) - Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, HRH Prince Ali attended a ceremony at the Amman Martyrs Site on Friday, marking the second anniversary of the Amman bombings, which claimed the lives of 87 people, 70 of them Jordanians.

Prince Ali laid a wreath of flowers at the memorial for those who died in the attacks.

The monument, which was unveiled last year, is inscribed with the names of the victims of the attacks, who were killed when suicide bombers blew themselves up at three separate hotels in the capital on November 9, 2005.

On the first anniversary of the Amman bombings, one of the streets adjacent to the site was named Amman Martyrs Street in honour of the victims, while another was dedicated to the memory of Syrian film director Mustafa Aqqad, one of those killed.

The Prince and HRH Princess Rym Ali also met with relatives and families of those who were killed in the bombings.

HRH Prince Raad, Chief Chamberlain, Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit and other senior officials and officers also attended the ceremony at the site, which was established on an eight-dunum area in Deir Ghbar by the Greater Amman Municipality.

Also on Friday, Royal Court Chief Salem Turk conveyed His Majesty King Abdullah’s greetings to the families of those who were killed and injured in the Amman bombings.

During a lunch banquet at the Royal Court, Turk stressed King Abdullah’s keenness to keep in contact with the victims’ families.

Turk also referred to a society, which was established upon the Monarch’s directives, to extend material and moral support to the families.

The society, which held its first meeting at the Royal Court last month, is headed by Ramzi Nasser, whose parents were killed in the attacks.

During Friday’s banquet, Nasser presented a briefing about the society, outlining its objectives and describing how it works.
