King holds talks with
Palestinian President
Amman, April 15 (Petra)—His Majesty King Abdullah II held talks in Amman with
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the latest developments related to
negotiations between the Palestinian and Israelis and efforts to advance these
negotiations. During the meeting, which comes within the process of coordinating
efforts ahead of President Abbas’s expected visit to Washington, His Majesty
reiterated Jordan’s support to the Palestinian National Authority in its efforts
to achieve real progress in the peace process through serious negotiations that
tackle all final status issues.
The King urged the Israeli side to respond positively to these efforts to achieve just and permanent peace by giving up its policies and unilateral actions, at the top of which is ending settlement activities, opening border crossings and removing road blocks.
His Majesty also called on the international community to continue supporting and encouraging the Palestinians and Israelis to arrive at a solution for the Palestinian issue based on international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab peace Initiative, leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
President Abbas briefed His Majesty on his meeting last Sunday with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that aimed at pushing the peace process and overcoming obstacles facing it. He also expressed thanks and appreciation of Jordan’s continued support to the Palestinians at all levels. Abbas, who is expected to visit Moscow and Washington, said in a press statement after the meeting, that he had discussed issues related to the international conference in Moscow, the political process and final status issues. He added that his talks with the US President George Bush in Washington will deal with final status issues and the situation in the Palestinian lands.
