Committee to promote
human rights to youth
The National Committee for Promoting Human Rights launched a national plan on
Thursday seeking to raise awareness among students and youth on human rights.
The four-year strategy also seeks to introduce concepts of human rights in the
educational system and build the capabilities of workers at the ministries and
institutions concerned with human rights, Minister of Education Tayseer Nuaimi
said Thursday at a ceremony at the National Centre for Human Rights. He added
that the ministry works on enhancing the concepts of human rights through
creating “human rights” clubs at schools and organising annual contests on the
issue and via enhancing dialogue between students. Minister of Culture Nancy
Bakir said Jordan’s interest in the issue of human rights started to take a
serious approach in the early 1990s, when the first department concerned with
human rights issues was created at the Prime Ministry. Bakir added that a major
development was in 1999 when His Majesty King Abdullah gave instructions for
forming national committees for human rights, chaired by Her Majesty Queen Rania.
