King, Mubarak say truce hoped
to improve life in Gaza
AMMAN (JT) - His Majesty King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on
Wednesday said they hope the Gaza truce would lead to a better life for
residents of the coastal enclave.
They said at a meeting at the Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh that the deal
reached by Israel and Hamas, through an Egyptian mediation, would “lessen the
suffering of the Palestinian people and lift the embargo on the Gaza Strip”.
They also expressed their support for President Mahmoud Abbas’ efforts to end
division between Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the two leaders reiterated that the continuation of Israeli
settlement activity hinders progress in the peace process.
The King and Mubarak called for intensified international efforts to reach
permanent solutions to final status issues and the establishment of an
independent Palestinian state in accordance with international resolutions and
the Arab Peace Initiative.
On Lebanon, they urged a “quick formation of a national unity government”.
Both leaders called for full implementation of the Doha agreement between
Lebanese rivals in May.
The King, who came back later in the day, also discussed with Mubarak ways to
boost joint Arab action and developments in Iraq.
They also said they were keen to bolster bilateral ties and cooperation in
various fields.
