Iraq to free 3 Jordanian prisoners

By Omar Obeidat

AMMAN –– Three Jordanian citizens freed from Iraqi prisons are expected to arrive back home Saturday, a Foreign Ministry official said on Thursday.

He added there are efforts under way to secure the release of other prisoners in the future.

The three prisoners, who are due to arrive in Amman on Saturday through the Red Cross, are Abdul Fattah Jammal, Ibrahim Abu Samrah and Hussein Zamel, according to Ambassador Ahmad Mubaideen, head of the consular department at the ministry.

The official stopped short of giving further details on the nature of charges and the prison terms the three men served in Iraq.

A spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Amman said that more details will be available on Saturday.

Mubaideen told The Jordan Times that the release of the three prisoners was a result of the government’s intensive efforts to free all Jordanian prisoners in Iraq.

Early this month, the Kingdom proposed to the Iraqi government to swap non-political prisoners providing that they complete their terms in their home countries, a step, officials said, that would spare their families the burden of travelling to see their relatives.
