'Jordan-Egypt
coordination on Mideast crucial'
AMMAN (JT) - His Majesty King Abdullah received a message from Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak on Monday addressing efforts to set the Israel-Palestine
peace process in motion.
The message was passed on by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit at a
meeting in which he briefed the Monarch on the outcome of his recent talks with
top US administration officials in Washington. The discussions focused on how to
kick-start serious negotiations to find a comprehensive solution to the
Arab-Israeli conflict, a Royal Court statement said yesterday. At the meeting,
King Abdullah emphasised the importance of continued coordination between Jordan
and Egypt to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in line with the two-state
solution. He underlined the need to develop a unified Arab position to achieve
comprehensive peace based on the relevant terms of reference and the Arab Peace
Initiative.
Also yesterday, Prime Minister Nader Dahabi met with the visiting official to
discuss developments in the region.
Both sides agreed it was crucial to continue coordination to realise a unified
Arab stance in the upcoming stage. The coming days, they said, are expected to
witness intensive diplomatic activities to bring about peace in the region in
accordance with the two-state solution.
They also emphasised the urgent need to confront all attempts to hamper progress
towards a final solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The two-state solution involves the establishment of an independent Palestinian
state with Jerusalem as its capital, and Israeli withdrawal from all occupied
Arab territories.
Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh also met with Aboul Gheit and discussed means to
foster bilateral ties and efforts to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
The Egyptian official’s visit to Amman comes days ahead of US President Barack
Obama’s visit to Cairo on June 4, where he is expected to address the Muslim
world.
