Jordan renews commitment to provide facilities for
Palestinian trade
Amman, July 30 (Petra)--Government officials renewed on Thursday Jordan's
commitment to provide facilities for Palestinian trade through Jordanian ports
and the King Hussein Bridge to support the Palestinian economy.
The commitment was made during a meeting that brought together Secretary General
of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Muntasir Oqleh, Director General of Jordan
Customs Major General Ghalib Al Sarayrah, Undersecretary of the Palestinian
Ministry of Economy Abdul Hafiz Nofal and representatives of the Jordanian and
Palestinian private sector.
The meeting stressed the importance of boosting trade exchange between the two
sides that would reflect positively on Palestinians.
Oqleh said Jordan was working relentlessly to increase trade exchange with the
Palestinians, adding the Palestinian market was a major market for Jordan but
faced obstacles due to Israeli rules.
The two sides are expected to hold soon meetings of the Higher Committee
co-chaired by the Jordanian and Palestinian prime ministers to discuss means of
boosting economic ties Jordan's exports to the Palestinian side stood at JD10
million until the end of May this year compared to JD16 million in the same
period of last year.
Imports reached JD11 million until the end of May compared to JD9 million in the
same period of last year.
Director of Jordan Customs said the department was ready to provide facilities
for movement of Palestinian goods.
Undersecretary of the Palestinian Ministry of Economy for his highlighted the
importance of coordinating stances to increase trade exchange.
