Judeh calls for more world involvement
in Mideast
AMMAN (JT) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh on Tuesday reiterated that
the international community needs to play an effective role in resolving the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict in a way that leads to the establishment of
regional peace and stability.
During his meetings with several international officials on the sidelines of the
UN General Assembly meetings, Judeh highlighted the Jordanian stance calling for
a comprehensive and just solution to the Palestinian question. Talks also
addressed means to enhance bilateral cooperation, the Jordan News Agency, Petra,
reported.
Meeting with Tony Blair, the Quartet’s Middle East envoy, Judeh reiterated the
importance of activating the Quartet’s role in urging the international
community to shoulder its responsibilities and work to achieve regional peace.
Judeh also met with White House Middle East adviser Dennis Ross and Assistant
Secretary of State Jeffrey D. Feltman. During his meeting with the US officials,
he emphasised the need to seize the opportunity at hand to achieve peace, noting
that Israel’s settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories,
including Jerusalem, is a major obstacle to progress in the drive for peace.
The foreign minister also met with US Special Representative for Pakistan and
Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke, who commended Jordan’s participation in the
peacekeeping contingents in Afghanistan and the humanitarian assistance it
extends through the field hospital it has set in the Asian country.
Also on Tuesday, Judeh attended a meeting that brought together Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas and Arab foreign ministers. Abbas briefed the top
diplomats on the outcome of his meeting with US President Barack Obama and
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
