Jordan, S. Arabia insist on clear plan for Mideast peace
AMMAN (JT) –– Jordan and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday stressed the need to relaunch serious peace negotiations with a specific time frame and a clear plan to address all aspects of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and establish an independent Palestinian state.
During a meeting in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, His Majesty King Abdullah and King Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia discussed efforts to launch peace negotiations and end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution in accordance with international resolutions and relevant terms of reference, especially the Arab Peace Initiative, according to a Royal Court statement.
The two leaders stressed that Israel should end all its unilateral measures, especially the expansion of settlements and plans that threaten the identity of Jerusalem and its holy sites.
Regarding the internal Palestinian situation, they stressed the importance of achieving Palestinian reconciliation as soon as possible in order to unify the national front and improve the Palestinian people's economic and living conditions.
King Abdullah, who returned home later in the day, briefed the Saudi monarch on talks he held with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Monday, which addressed efforts to relaunch Mideast peace negotiations according to the two-state formula as the only way to achieve a comprehensive and just solution.
Meanwhile, His Majesty reiterated Jordan’s support for Saudi Arabia and its right to defend its borders and security, saying that its stability is crucial to the entire region.
Discussions also covered bilateral ties and means to boost joint Arab cooperation.
The King voiced appreciation for Saudi Arabia's support for several development projects in the Kingdom.
His Majesty also congratulated the Saudi monarch over Saudi Crown Prince Sultan Ben Abdul Aziz's return after completing medical treatment abroad.
The meeting was attended by HRH Prince Feisal, Prime Minister Samir Rifai, Royal Court Chief Nasser Lozi, King’s Adviser Ayman Safadi, Director of the General Intelligence Department Lieutenant General Mohammad Raqqad, the Saudi crown prince and several members of the Saudi royal family.
