Jordan urges stronger int’l
peace efforts
AMMAN (Petra) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh on Wednesday underlined
the need to intensify regional and international efforts to jump-start serious
and effective negotiations to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
During a meeting with UN Special Envoy to the Middle East Robert Serry, he said
the conflict should be resolved based on the two-state solution, the agreed upon
international terms of reference and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative within a
regional context that realises comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
Highlighting the significant role of the UN and the international community in
this regard, Judeh also stressed the importance of activating the role of the
international Quartet to overcome obstacles to peace.
The minister urged the speedy launch of serious and effective peace talks that
address all final status issues, including borders, Jerusalem, refugees,
security and water, starting from where previous negotiations left off.
He also pointed out the need for a monitoring mechanism, a specific time frame
for negotiations and a deadline for the envisioned resolution.
Judeh reiterated that Israel's unilateral measures in the occupied Palestinian
territories, especially in East Jerusalem - such as housing demolitions, forced
evictions of Palestinians and excavation works beneath the Islamic and Christian
holy sites in the city - are illegal and rejected and should be stopped
immediately.
Serry stressed the UN support for efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict based on the two-state formula and to attain comprehensive peace and
stability in the Middle East.
