‘Jordan committed to
peacekeeping contribution’
AMMAN (JT) - Jordan is fully committed to its humanitarian role in maintaining
peace and stability in Afghanistan and other troubled areas around the world by
contributing to the UN’s international peacekeeping forces, Foreign Minister
Nasser Judeh said on Thursday.
In remarks he made during a meeting with members of the Senate’s Committee on
Foreign Affairs, he underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to defend the true
image of Islam by promoting the concepts of the Amman Message, the Jordan News
Agency, Petra, reported.
He added that Jordan will use all available means to fight terrorism and those
who attempt to harm the Kingdom’s national security and stability.
He voiced pride in the role played by the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) and the
General Intelligence Department in standing up to “any plots against the country
and striking terrorism whatever form it takes and wherever it is”.
According to the UN, Jordan is the seventh largest contributor of uniformed
personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, with nearly 3,800 serving worldwide.
In a statement last month, the JAF said that from 1989 until late December 2009,
about 61,611 Jordanian army, civil defence and public security personnel have
taken part in the UN peacekeeping missions.
Currently, there are about 2,064 Jordanian peacekeepers stationed in different
parts of the world. They are mainly in the Congo, Liberia, the Ivory Coast and
Haiti, in addition to field hospitals in Afghanistan, Iraq, Ramallah and Jenin.
