Judeh briefs
Mubarak on peace efforts
SHARM EL SHEIKH (Petra) –– Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Wednesday conveyed a
message from His Majesty King Abdullah to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on
the latest developments in efforts to achieve peace in the region.
Judeh briefed Mubarak on the outcome of meetings the King held this week with
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu.
The foreign minister also briefed the Egyptian leader on the diplomatic
communications the King is making in order to remove obstacles facing efforts to
end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the two-state solution,
guaranteeing the establishment of an independent state for Palestinians on their
national soil.
After the Mubarak-Judeh meeting, Egyptian presidential spokesman Suleiman Awad
said that Jordan and Egypt are working with several regional and international
partners to establish the right conditions to relaunch serious direct peace
negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to build on the achievements
that were made and to reach a peace agreement that tackles all final status
issues.
Also yesterday, Judeh held talks with the Japanese government’s special envoy
for peace in the Middle East, Yutaka Iimura, on bilateral ties and efforts to
establish the right conditions to start direct negotiations between the
Palestinians and Israelis.
He briefed the Japanese official on King Abdullah’s political efforts to achieve
peace and stability in the region based on a two-state solution that guarantees
the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967
borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in security and peace next to
Israel.
He reiterated Jordan’s stance that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict should be
resolved on the basis of the two-state formula within a regional context and
according to the Arab Peace Initiative and international references.
Judeh highlighted the important role of Japan in pushing peace efforts forward,
stressing the need to continue coordination on various issues of mutual concern.
While in Egypt, Judeh will take part in the extraordinary meeting of the Arab
Peace Initiative follow-up committee, which will be held at the Arab League
headquarters in Cairo today upon Palestinian request.
The committee, which includes 14 Arab states, will listen to a detailed report
from Abbas on the outcome of the indirect talks between Palestinians and
Israelis, which have been taking place over the past three months under US
supervision.
