MUSCAT — The first regional centre for astronomy and space sciences will open in
Jordan during the first quarter of this year, Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre
(RJGC) Director General Awni Khasawneh announced on Monday.
In remarks at the 10th Conference of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space
Sciences in Oman, he said the centre seeks to develop the skills of scientists
and workers in the field of environmental research, remote sensing and other
related sciences.
The centre will also contribute to enhancing regional and international
cooperation in the field, Khasawneh added, noting that the UN Office for Outer
Space Affairs has approved the establishment of the centre in Jordan due to the
availability of the required institutions and facilities.
